A Story of Resilience: Clyde Catron Shares His Journey Through Addiction and Recovery
GAFD sponsored a two-day speaking engagement featuring Clyde Catron, who shared his lived experience with addiction, homelessness, incarceration, and long-term recovery. The goal of this initiative was to educate, raise awareness, and encourage meaningful conversations around substance use and rehabilitation.
During the engagement, Clyde presented to four audiences across the Austin area. The first was an open community event in partnership with the Texas Council for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, primarily serving Deaf individuals and professionals in Deaf-related fields. He then presented twice at the Texas School for the Deaf, once for students and once for the broader community. The series concluded with a presentation at the Travis County Correctional Complex for incarcerated individuals.
“It takes self-actualization (mental, physical, spiritual), taking accountability, owning up, and repeating these thoughts and actively navigating your way out from addiction into sobriety and recovery. Everyday.” –Clyde Catron
Across all settings, Clyde emphasized the realities and consequences of addiction, while highlighting the importance of accountability, support systems, and access to resources in recovery. His story of resilience and determination reinforced a powerful message: change is possible, and no one is alone in their journey.
His openness fostered a strong sense of connection among attendees, many of whom related to his experiences or gained new perspectives on addiction within underserved communities. We are grateful to Clyde Catron for sharing his story and leaving the community with a message of hope, strength, and perseverance.
